New Delhi: US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has made strong remarks after the deadly terror attack at Sydney's Bondi Beach, calling Islamism a direct threat to global safety.

Speaking after the December 14 shooting in Sydney, Gabbard said the attack should not come as a surprise. She claimed it was the result of what she described as a large-scale entry of Islamists into Australia, which, according to her, has pushed the country towards a dangerous tipping point.

What happened at Sydney’s Bondi Beach?

On December 14, two attackers opened fire at Bondi Beach in Sydney, where around 1,000 people had gathered during celebrations for the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. At least 15 people were killed and several others injured in the attack.

Australian police confirmed the incident was being treated as a terrorist act. One attacker was shot dead in a police encounter at the scene, while the second was critically injured and taken into custody at a hospital.

Why does Gabbard call Islamism a global threat?

In a post on X, Gabbard said the violence was a direct result of what she described as a growing Islamist presence in Australia.

Gabbard said the goal of Islamists was not limited to targeting Australia alone. She claimed their broader aim was the "Islamisation" of countries across the world, including the US.

According to her, Islamist ideology now represents the biggest threat to freedom, security and prosperity globally. She said this danger extends beyond borders and demands urgent action from governments.

What warning did she issue for Europe and Australia?

Gabbard issued a stark warning for Europe, saying it may already be "too late" to reverse the situation there. She added that Australia could also be reaching a similar stage, where controlling the threat becomes increasingly difficult.

However, she said the US still has a window of opportunity, though that time is limited.

Why did Gabbard praise Donald Trump's policies?

The US intelligence chief backed President Donald Trump's approach to border security. She said his administration prioritised securing US borders, deporting known and suspected terrorists, and stopping large-scale, unchecked migration that could put Americans at risk.

Gabbard warned that if strong steps are not taken in time, the US could end up following the same path she believes Europe and possibly Australia are already on.

What exactly did Gabbard say in her statement?

Referring to the attack during the Hanukkah celebrations, Gabbard said no one should be shocked by what happened in Australia. She described it as a direct outcome of the spread of Islamist ideology and repeated her view that such forces pose the greatest danger to global peace and security.

Her comments have sparked debate, coming at a time when Australia continues to investigate the attack and the wider security implications surrounding it.
